Maintenance dredging of the Lake Worth Inlet was completed sooner than expected. Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Corporation spent less than a month and a half dredging sand that accumulated in the inlet following Hurricanes Ian and Nicole.

Due to safety concerns, the Palm Beach Harbor Pilots decreased the maximum operating draft of the inlet. The draft restrictions in place for several months, caused logistical and financial strains on several Port of Palm Beach tenants whose vessels need at least a 27-33 foot draft to enter the harbor. This causes a ripple effect that spreads across to the Caribbean Basin where residents, resorts and cruise lines rely on day-to-day shipping services from the Port of Palm Beach. The $10M maintenance-dredging project funded by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, removed approximated 190,000 cubic yards of sand. The contractor used pipes to pump the beach quality sand onto the Town of Palm Beach.

During the dredge project, representatives with the United States Army Corps of Engineers visited the Port of Palm Beach. Executive Director Manuel Almira used the opportunity to thank the USACE for the funding and explained the consequences of shoaling.

Port Commissioners Dr. Deandre Poole, Varisa Lall Dass and Director of Operations and Business Development Michael Meekins traveled to the State Capitol earlier this month to advocate for port funding. During their legislative visit, they attended back to back meetings with lawmakers including Senators Bobby Powell, Tina Polsky, Tom Wright, Gayle Harrell and State Representatives Tae Edmonds, David Silvers and Alex Andrade. They also met with Governor Ron Desantis's Legislative Affairs Director Stephanie Kopelousos and Florida Ports Council President Mike Rubin. The legislative meetings provided an opportunity for Port Commissioners and Director Meekins to share the benefits of funding port projects such as beautifying the permieter wall on President Barack Obama Highway, shore power for the cruise ship, and purchasing land on 10th street.

This month we are partnering with the Kids Cancer Foundation in Royal Palm Beach by collecting Easter basket stuffers for the nonprofit's annual Easter event.
Earlier this month, Child Enrichment and Volunteer Coordinator Kenisa Helm provided a tour of the center to the Port's Public Information Officer Yaremi Farinas. Kenisa shared the different services and programs the center offers to local families who are going through the difficult journey of childhood cancer. Our goal is to collect enough items to stuff 100 Easter baskets so the kids and their siblings can enjoy the holiday. You can drop-off donations now until March 27th at the Port's Maritime Office Complex located at 1 East 11th St. Suite 600, Riviera Beach, FL. 33404 or call the PIO at 561-383-4138.
Those who donate are welcome to join us on Wednesday, March 29th at 2:30 PM at the Kids Cancer Foundation to deliver the donations and assemble the Easter baskets for the kids. Please RSVP to Yaremi Farinas at yfarinas@portofpalmbeach.com.
