Port of Palm Beach Commissioners and staff members are remembering longtime friend Sam Oser who passed away on Feb. 10.
Oser, who was a former Marine, was 95 years old.
He was no stranger to the Port of Palm Beach. He had been visiting the Port since 2005 when he was invited by Port Commissioner Dr. Jean Enright.
"Sam was an intelligent, witty and funny man. He always knew how to make people laugh," Dr. Enright said.
Oser, who was the chairman of the Century Village Democratic Club, would visit the Port regularly to sail on the casino cruise called the Palm Beach Princess. The cruise, which stopped running in 2010 after an almost 30 year career, was popular among Century Village residents.
“Sam and his friends would take a bus to the Port every week to enjoy a short getaway, beautiful views and delicious meal on the Princess,” Dr. Enright said.
Port Commissioners Dr. Enright and Wayne Richards often joined the group on the ship.
Oser also learned about other port activities by attending the monthly scheduled Regular Board Meetings.
Port Executive Director Manuel Almira remembers Oser as a prankster, making people laugh everywhere he went.
“I remember one day we were eating a local restaurant and Sam told some people at another table, “I don’t like you.” They asked why and Sam said “Because you have more hair than me,” Almira laughed while telling the story.
“That’s the kind of man he was. Always joking around with everyone,” Almira said.
