We recently told you about how Port staff found a deceased veteran's memorial flag in the vacant USCG Station on Peanut Island. The flag belonged to Army Col. Robert J. Gilroy, who died in Bennington, Vermont in 1993. Col. Gilroy served more than 30 years in the U.S. Army. Port staff tracked down his niece in Clearwater, FL.
This week she emailed us a thank you message, along with a photo of her and her uncles memorial flag. We are happy to see the flag with its rightful owner and to know Col. Robert J. Gilroy's courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
