The Port of Palm Beach proudly reflects on the life and service of Bill Messer, who dedicated 32 years as a harbor pilot guiding vessels through our waters. Bill was not only a highly respected mariner but also a cherished member of the port community whose passion for the sea and compassion for others left a lasting impact.

Bill MesserBill’s maritime career began at the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point (USMMA), where he was trained to serve as an officer in the U.S. Merchant Marine. Known for his academic excellence and unwavering loyalty to his classmates, Bill forged lifelong friendships during his time at Kings Point.

His dedication to his work as a Palm Beach Harbor Pilot was rooted in a true love for the sea. He considered it a privilege to collaborate with fellow harbor pilots each day, helping to ensure the safe and efficient movement of ships through the port. His knowledge, experience, and steady presence made him a trusted leader on the water.

Beyond his professional achievements, Bill was an avid athlete and adventurer. He regularly ran in competitive races, including the Disney Marathon, and played tennis multiple times a week. In 2004, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, a challenge he undertook on a whim and accomplished with characteristic determination.

Bill was also deeply committed to helping others. His generosity was evident in his everyday actions, and he further extended that legacy by creating a foundation to support those in need.

One of Bill's achievements that gave him the greatest pleasure was when he learned to fly an airplane. After completing the required lessons, he earned his pilot's license and went on to obtain his instrument rating. Bill loved the freedom he found in flying, soaring above the ground gave him a sense of independence and adventure that nothing else could match.
