Chairwoman Priscilla Taylor meets
with one of the groups of JFK Middle School 6th graders
before they tour the Palm Beach Princess.
Lounging on the Palm Beach
Princess’ Lido deck, and experiencing the -10 degree
temperature of Merchant’s Exports/Port of Palm Beach
Cold’s coldest freezer were a couple of the
highlights sixth graders found when they came to visit the
Port this past April.
As a key part in
its community involvement program, the Port of Palm Beach
“adopted” John F. Kennedy Middle School in Riviera Beach.
Port of Palm Beach staff, tenant companies and other local
firms welcomed groups of 30 students to the Port for eight
visits over a four-week period. The program began with a
visit to the school from Port Commissioners.
“The Port of Palm
Beach and its tenants are delighted to have an opportunity
to support our community’s young people this way,” said
Priscilla A. Taylor, chairwoman of the Port of Palm Beach
District Board of Commissioners. “We hope that students at
JFK Middle School will benefit from these efforts and
perhaps develop an understanding of and interest in the
vital maritime industry here in Riviera Beach.”
In addition an
educational power-point presentation, guest speakers and
port provided school supplies, several local companies
made donations to the school supplies drive, including
cash contributions totaling $750 from the certified public
accounting firm of Divine, Blalock, Martin & Sellari and
Teeters Agency & Stevedoring.
Others contributing to the program, through furnishing
such items as free admission passes and/or offering
speakers, include: Palm Beach Princess, Port of Palm Beach
Cold/Merchant’s Export, Tropical Shipping, Dossman Inc.,
Cheney Brothers, the Florida Department of Children &
Families, South Florida Science Museum, Pepsi-Cola
Bottling Co., Lion Country Safari, Roger Dean Stadium and
Skate Zone.
